San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Receives $1.1 Million Grant for Traffic Safety

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has been awarded a substantial grant of $1,110,000 from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), a move aimed at bolstering efforts to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities on county roads. This funding represents a significant investment in traffic safety and enforcement in the region.

Sheriff Shannon D. Dicus acknowledged the grant as a response to widespread community calls for enhanced traffic enforcement across the county. "The public's concern for improved traffic safety is a priority for us. This generous grant from the California Office of Traffic and Safety enables us to expand our enforcement operations and focus on driver awareness and safety," Dicus said.

The grant will fund a variety of programs and resources through September 2024, including:

  • DUI checkpoints and patrols targeting impaired driving.

  • High-visibility enforcement operations against distracted driving, particularly violations of California’s hands-free cell phone law.

  • Targeted enforcement actions addressing dangerous behaviors that threaten the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

  • Operations focusing on primary crash factors such as speeding, failure to yield, and improper lane changes.

  • Community education presentations covering key traffic safety issues like distracted and impaired driving, speeding, and bicycle and pedestrian safety.

  • Joint enforcement initiatives with neighboring jurisdictions.

  • Training and recertification for officers in areas such as Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) programs.

This initiative, funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, underscores a commitment to enhancing road safety in San Bernardino County, addressing both enforcement and educational aspects to create safer travel conditions for all road users.
