Heads up, drivers! If you're cruising around Civic Center Dr. this Saturday, brace yourself for a bumper-to-bumper headache. From 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 18, a special event is set to turn the stretch between Red Oak St. and White Oak Ave. into a slow-moving maze.

And it's not just Civic Center Dr. getting the traffic tangle treatment. Arrow Rte., sandwiched between Red Oak St. and White Oak Ave., might just test your patience too. So, if you've got places to be and no time for a traffic jam jam, better plot a different course or leave those wheels at home. Consider yourself warned!

San Bernardino County Approves $4.5 Million Regional Animal Shelter

Bloomington, a community deeply invested in the welfare of its animal population, is on the verge of a significant development: the construction of its very own animal shelter. This advancement comes with the backing of a substantial $4.5 million state grant, part of the 2022 state budget, earmarking a new chapter in animal care within the region.

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, in a unanimous decision on Tuesday, Nov. 14, moved the project forward by approving the submission of the grant application. This decision, part of the board’s consent agenda, reflects a non-controversial, collective commitment to enhancing local animal welfare infrastructure.

Slated for 18313 Valley Boulevard in Bloomington, the proposed 61,000-square-foot facility, first announced in September, is poised to be a state-of-the-art shelter. With an estimated cost of $45 million and an anticipated opening in spring 2026, the shelter promises on-site veterinary care and a modernized environment for animals. This cost includes the demolition of the previous shelter at Ayala Park.

Supervisor Joe Baca Jr., representing Bloomington in the 5th District, emphasized the shelter's significance: “The new Animal Care Center is our pledge to a safer and more loving environment for every animal in our care. It’s a step forward, ensuring countless animals find the care they deserve in a modernized setting.”

The board is expected to greenlight the construction contract next summer, following the release of funds to the county, with construction commencing in fall 2024.

Upon completion, the Bloomington shelter will join the ranks of San Bernardino County’s county-run facilities, alongside existing shelters in Big Bear and Devore. As of September, the Devore shelter alone had catered to over 4,200 dogs and cats, underscoring the pressing need for expanded animal care services in the county.
