No More Party Pads: Ontario Sets Strict Limits on Airbnb and VRBO Rentals

Ontario's leadership has recently implemented new regulations for short-term rentals, focusing on their location and usage. The City Council's decision on Tuesday, Nov. 21, builds upon the initial rules set in December 2022. Now, these rentals are restricted to mixed-use and residential zones within Ontario and are prohibited from being used for events like weddings or large gatherings.

The council also introduced a noise curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and enforced parking limitations, restricting vehicles to driveways or garages of the rental properties. The city acknowledges the dual nature of short-term rentals, recognizing their benefits for travelers and property owners, but also noting their potential community impact. This concern arises amidst the growing presence of properties on platforms like Airbnb, VRBO, and Homeaway, with a report citing 1,627 such rentals in Ontario as of Nov. 22.

Ontario's move mirrors actions taken by other U.S. cities addressing resident complaints about noise, trash, and the effect of these rentals on local housing markets. San Bernardino County is currently evaluating the impact of short-term rentals. Earlier, Pomona City Council prohibited homeowners from offering short-term rentals if they don't reside in the property.

Last year, Ontario revised its development code to regulate short-term rentals, requiring owners to obtain permits and adhere to a specific application and renewal process.

Tonight! Family Secrets and Literary Genius: The Melville Family Saga Comes to Light

Ophelia’s Jump Productions is set to debut the world premiere of “Sealed Orders,” a new play by Claremont’s own playwright Jean Collinsworth. The opening performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, at the Ophelia’s Jump Theater in Upland.

Herman Melville, the renowned author of the deeply philosophical novel "Moby Dick," was a father to four children. His family life, however, was marked by strife and tragedy. Two of his children distanced themselves early on, citing their father's overbearing nature. His daughter, Bessie, chose a life of solitude, never leaving the family home or marrying. The most heartrending episode in the Melville household was the untimely death of his eldest son, Malcolm, at the age of 18, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This incident, widely believed to be a suicide, was swiftly concealed by the Melville family. A new historical drama delves into the complex interplay of relationships within the Melville family, seeking to understand the factors that drove Malcolm to his tragic end and examining the profound impact this event had on Melville's subsequent literary creations.
