Ontario Unanimously Approves Major Housing and School Project Despite Environmental Concerns

New home being constructed

The Ontario leadership recently reached a unanimous decision to expand Ontario Ranch by 113 acres, earmarking this area for new residential development and a prospective middle school. This decision, made on Tuesday, Nov. 21, involves the annexation of land located at the southwest corner of Haven and Eucalyptus avenues. The plan is to construct 1,470 new housing units, increasing the total planned units in the region to 3,888. Additionally, 20 acres have been allocated for a new middle school under the Mountain View School District, as detailed in a staff report prepared for the meeting.

An Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the project has identified that while the development will have minimal or no effects on water quality, it will inevitably lead to issues in air quality, noise pollution, and the loss of prime farmland. The report highlighted that out of 20 areas assessed, only three could not be mitigated to a less significant level, leaving some impacts as significant and unavoidable.

The project will result in the loss of 4.7 acres of prime farmland, a loss that is irreplaceable, according to the EIR. Furthermore, the development is expected to surpass regional thresholds for carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, contributing to increased air pollution. Despite mitigation efforts, these additional air pollution levels are deemed unavoidable.

However, the report concluded that the benefits of the new housing and school development outweigh the environmental drawbacks. The project is seen as a crucial step in addressing housing needs and educational facilities in the area.

Police Uncover Illegal Firearms and Drug Operation in Local Apartment Complex

Upland Police acted on intelligence indicating that a convicted felon, residing in an apartment on the 800 block of N. Campus Avenue, was unlawfully in possession of firearms. Armed with a search warrant, officers conducted a thorough search of the premises. During this operation, they discovered multiple unserialized firearms, along with a quantity of marijuana, which appeared to be prepared for sale. The suspect, identified as 54-year-old Thomas Jeffrey, was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple felony offenses.
